Hot. It was hot. Really hot.
The first thing Cleo felt, against her dusted purple, mochi-like body, was arid wind. It battered. It burnt. It smelled a little sweet.
For whatever reason, Cleo was sensing. She didn't quite understand why or how, but all five were once again in order. She knew she'd sensed things before, but, thinking about it, that was about it. That was all she knew. She didn't know where, or when...
A sudden blast of sand blew into Cleo's face, and her orange eyes were forced open. As they adjusted, a sprawling desert came into view. The ground glistened like a sea of stars, and the place was dotted with beautiful, rainbow-colored trees.
Where the heck am I?
Confusion, frustration, curiosity; they all rushed through Cleo's mind. She already had so many burning questions; why had she awoken? What had happened before this?
And yet it seemed she was alone. No one else stood among her, not a single soul as far as she could see. A part of her felt she really should've expected that, but she couldn't help but feel disappointed.
Hmm, hmm, hmm...
Wait. Maybe she was wrong.
The noise was coming from behind her. Instinctually, the blobling turned, and her eyes spied a towering, black stalk...

The stalk belonged to a plant which towered over her and grew beautiful rainbow petals at its peak, which created a nice patch of shade. It was one of those rainbow trees she had seen scattered around, and it was singing.
Cleo felt that part of her perk up. If this tree could sing, then maybe it could talk! Determined, Cleo took a deep breath, preparing to make a speech to it.
Sand. Lots of sand. She inhaled sand. It made her cough and splutter and her words crackle and fizzle. The tree, stunned, threw its petals in the air, exposing Cleo to more heat and making her wince.
Cleo stopped spluttering and the tree's petals relaxed. She sighed; this wasn't going the way she hoped. Still, she was adamant, and so she tried again.
"Greetings, fair mortal," Cleo said in a raspy and slightly regal voice. "They do knoweth me as Cleopatra the Cleo, and I haveth come to asketh the question. The question of whereth I ameth!"
She wasn't sure what she was trying to imitate, but she didn't feel it sounded right.
For a few moments, as if it was thinking, the tree remained silent. Then, suddenly, the tree began to chitter.
Chika, chika, chika...
It could communicate! Unfortunately, though, Cleo had no idea what. The blobling groaned; she didn't know anything.

"I can tell you're talkin' to me, but I dunno what you're sayin'. Dunno if I should or not, so I'm just gonna sit here and hope the wind talks."
If sinking into the ground counted as "sitting" since Cleo had no legs, then that is exactly what she did. She sat, listening to the whistling of the wind, for what seemed like ages, though, in our time scale, it was actually approximately five minutes.
Cleo sighed. No one was coming. She was alone apart from the tree, and she had no idea where to go next.
Sensing Cleo's dread, the tree rustled its shiny petals as if beckoning her over. Cleo grunted.
"You know I can't understand you." Cleo's expression was one of frustration. "I dunno where to go from here or if anyone understands me at all. Why are you still tryin' to talk to me, anyway?"
The tree folded all its petals but one, then pointed that singular petal high into the air.
Hmm, hmm, hmm...
Cleo blinked. In her mind, she was trying to make sense of this gesture. "You wanna go over there? No, there's something over there and you want it? You..."

Cleo grumbled. "You're a tricky one, you know that?"
The blobling wriggled until she was free of the sand, then began to shuffle across it. It was burning hot and did not feel comfortable on her blobby body at all.
"I can see you're pointin', so I'm just gonna head off in this direction and hope it leads somewhere. Maybe to someone. Bleh."
The tree unfurled its leaves and gave a chitter of agreement.
"See you later. Good to talk. Bye."
And, as the tree hummed its little tune, Cleo disappeared into the horizon. She would eventually learn more about this world and find the answers she sought, but for now, she was a lone desert traveller.
