Tsarina walked around the mountains, tagging behind her fellow Galanthillias and softly chirping. They had walked for a while to get here, and the pens were finally in the distance. The mountains were surprisingly cold, which she hadn’t expected compared to the relative warmth of the rest of the places she had been. Her Smuck and Meowler followed her closely, and she occasionally looked back to make sure they were still behind her. And of course, her huggy friends were in her wings, there to hug if anything happened. She was starting to get mildly concerned, anyway. Thornbeat was starting to act more odd, and she didn’t understand why. She’d probably ask to talk later, but Fantasia was still here, leading their group. That wouldn’t last, though, as they finally made it to the pens. Fantasia turned to her and Thornbeat, with her normal twitchy movements, gave them a gentle nod, and entered the pens. Tsarina watched her go in, almost tempted to go in as well. Someone suddenly grabbed her wing, bringing her out of her thoughts. She turned to Thornbeat, who had an odd look on her face. “Hi, One-T!” she chirped, “What do you need?”
“I need to talk to you, alone. Come on.” Thornbeat flew off away from the pens.
Tsarina hesitated for a moment. Something felt off about this. Maybe it was the way Thornbeat talked, or just her own anxiety about the situation. She didn’t know at this point. She finally followed after a moment, and noticed Thornbeat was flying to a rather remote part of the Mountains. She really was serious about talking about this alone.
After they finally landed, Thornbeat suddenly grabbed her, wrapping her in her wings. “Hey, Two-T. Now that we’re alone, I have a declaration to make. I couldn’t think of a perfect way to show you I care, so I won’t do anything but talk. The moment I laid my eyes on you, I knew you were special. A while later, once I got to know you, I knew I would do anything for you. I would protect you, I would hurt everyone else and myself to make sure you were okay. I have one question for you, my dear Two-T. Do you feel that way too?” She placed Tsarina back down on the ground and sat down in front of her, staring down intently.
Tsarina hesitated for a moment. She didn’t know. She was internally panicking because she didn’t understand what Thornbeat was even talking about. After a moment, she finally tried saying, “I don’t kn-”
She felt a sudden pain across her face. It didn’t take long for her to realize what had happened: Thornbeat had hit her, scratched her across the face. It wasn’t a deep scratch, but it hurt her feelings more than her body. She flattened her ears a bit and focused on trying not to cry.
Thornbeat suddenly shouted, “Oh no! I’m so sorry, I didn’t mean to! I was readjusting and accidentally scratched you. Continue, please.”
Tsarina stayed quiet for a few moments, her ears still flattened. She was fairly certain this wasn’t a mistake at all, Thornbeat always had her reasons. But they were friends, and she could forgive her. It wasn’t like she had anyone else right now, and the thought of leaving the group or perhaps even getting hit again by her own friends hurt her more. She adored her friends, and they were the best people she had ever known. She looked down and gave herself a moment to consider if any of this was even worth it, if she should just run or give in, before finally managing to squeak out an answer.
“Yes, I do.”
