Once he was sure that Kip was settled securely on his back Evrah began in a gentle stride in the indicated direction. The walk was mostly quiet in a strange contrast to how their adventure began. Evrah used the silence to review the situation they had survived. Trying to pin point when the change in his emotions had occurred. He wanted to be able to recognize it if it were to happen again. Would he be able to resist it if he knew the creature was there? He thought he had nearly broken out of it right before… right before Kip accidentally broke them both free of it. And that most certainly hadn’t been Kip’s intent at the time.
Since he came to be, Evrah hadn’t felt properly threatened by anything. In the swamps you simply avoided the tar pits- unless you were one of those cultists, and everything else was relatively harmless. In most cases even the more feral blobs were easily avoided or still reasonable enough to live and let live. Yet, Kip had frightened him. And yes, the sense of fear had been superficially inflated, but the memory of it lingered uncomfortably. He was hyper aware of Kip’s placement on his back and in spite of all the logic Evrah tried to convince himself with that it was fine now- everything was fine- he couldn’t bring his attention on Kip to properly relax.
"That...thing." Kip’s muted voice broke the silence as Evrah spotted the tree. Evrah’s attention was already on Kip so he heard him just fine. "It got to me so easily. Some hero I'm gonna be." It took effort not to stop his careful strides as Evrah processed the words slower than he should have. "I'm so sorry, Evrah. I didn't mean anything I said."
“No.” Evrah snapped over his shoulder mid-way through Kip’s last statement and stopped abruptly as the meaning of the words caught up with him. Even as he turned his head back to glare weakly at him, he slipped his tail up to make sure Kip wouldn’t fall off. “Don’t you dare.” He wasn’t yelling, volume barely above what Kip had used, “Don’t. You. Dare.” He began walking again, only a bit faster than before, “I chose you. If you’re doubting yourself, you are doubting me, and I will not accept that. If you must apologize for something apologize for that.”
As they reached the chromillia the plant greeted them with a happily trilling hum that earned it a perturbed glare from the black blob before he redirected his attention back to Kip. With a tilt he gently slid the green blob down into a secure spot in the sand between two of the trees roots then he sat himself in front of him.
“We were both unprepared and unaware. It took advantage of both of us. If you belittle yourself in this, you belittle me and that will be your biggest mistake today.” The glare he wore at this point was mostly just his eyes drooping, but he felt this was more important than sleep or the wound on his tail that he was actively ignoring. “You will learn from your mistakes and be better for making them. If you didn’t like what that creature made you into you now know what to avoid cultivating in yourself. You will be a hero if you see fit to be one. And I know you will succeed because I chose you.” Evrah lifted his head higher and looked down his snout at Kip in much the way he had when they had first met and challenged, “Do you doubt me?”
