So very still was this blobling that one could mistake Echo from behind as a smooth rock existing amongst the sands. ...Actually, there were probably rocks with more movement to them than Echo had right now.
Time passed by. Never once did it occur to Echo that it might be possible to do anything more than merely exist. If no one found Echo, perhaps it never would occur to this blobling to take any form of action.
Echo was bored, of course. But this blobling did not realize the solution for that sensation. There were many things that Echo did not realize. So the gray blobling continued to exist motionlessly.
Maki calmly pads across the sands taking in the view. While she has crossed the many landscapes across Terrea, the Smiley Sands were probably her favorite. Maybe it was because it was the first land when blobs originally came into being. It gave her a feeling she couldn't describe. Not that she was one of the first ones there. She was relatively young compared to that.
While walking, she spotted a dark smooth sphere that sharply contrasted against the bright sand in the distance. Maki recognized it to be a blob, as she's seen plenty of roundlings in many various colors. She wondered how they appear, as bleeds typically make blobs that have features already attached.
Leaving the thought behind, she came up to the back of the blobling, giving it generous room and walked around to its front as to not scare them. A massive dragon appeared in the view of the blob. If she could compare, the blob was probably the size of just her head. Maki laid down and folded her paws to make herself more compact and small.
She tilted her head to the side slightly and said her hellos.
Greetings young one, art thee in needeth of assistance? Thee seemeth to has't been sitting here for a long while.
Suddenly she remembered that some found her speech difficult and quickly added a sentence.
Oh, and prithee asketh me to repeat differently or explain if I needeth to.
If Echo yet knew fear, perhaps Echo would have been startled by the appearance of the rather large blobling. Or perhaps not. As it was, she merely stared at intriguing stranger at first, the words filtering in.
While the words made sense to her, Echo had an odd gut feeling that this was not how most beings spoke. But she had not met many beings at all, so Echo dismissed this feeling with barely an acknowledgement.
"Greetings," Echo repeated, knowing that word was important to say, her voice blank of anything. "Assistance..." She trailed off at that word, knowing it was also significant, but in a different way than the first word Echo had spoken.
"Sitting... a while," Echo echoed back. Or perhaps, that was her own way of confirming the statement.
The second statement, while Echo understood the words, she did not truly understand. Why would the other need to do anything differently or explain? What was there to explain? So the round blob merely regarded the larger blobling with confused bafflement.
The blobling responded almost dreamlike, not really forming full sentences. It was Maki's first time interacting with a blob like this. She didn't know whether to be concerned that the blobling couldn't or didn't talk well, or if it was normal for them. Well, they did at least understand her, maybe. She didn't really know. There wasn't enough talk or interaction to really know if this was normal.
Maki lowered her head to carefully study the face of the grey blob with gentle eyes. It didn't really matter how the blob was. They said assistance after all, and in her eyes, that was good enough. She calmly continued on.
Mine own name is maki, what's yours? Eke, what wouldst thee liketh help with? Is't yond thee cannot move? Or something about sitting?
As the gray blobling was studied, she studied the larger blobling in return though for different reasons. The other had so many features that Echo did not. The other blobling- Maki, she said, was so different from her own round shape.
"Maki... Mine own name is..." And here she paused. She knew her name... But voicing her own unique words was instinctively terrifying for this blobling for reasons she did not know. "Repeat," She tried a word that she had heard moments prior, since the meaning was close. But it was wrong.
Echo's anxiety grew, terror at the idea of stating her own words conflicting with the desire to be known truthfully.
"Repeat... repeat...repeat," She hesitantly tried, voice getting softer with each echo, but her voice cut off with terror each time and she could not even say 'repeat' was not her name now.
Pale eyes regarding Maki, expression no longer blank but distressed enough to be noticed.
Maki heard the blob respond with 'Mine own name is'. She knew that her speech was unique to her as far as other blobs come, so to hear it being used by the roundling was interesting. Thinking of it harder, hasn't it just been using the words she's been speaking recently?
Breaking the line of thought, she focused back on the blobing, this time it was visibly distressed. It was saying 'repeat' several times. Her motherly instincts were kicking in, and she had a strong feeling to comfort the poor blob. She unfolded her paws and opened them in a sign of embrace.
She said with concern:
T's okay little one, doth thee needeth a hug? By the way thee behold, I bethink not thy name is repeat. We can play the guessing game. Say aye 'r nay to a word, and I shall figure it out eventually. Wouldst that be well?
Maki's tail was swishing gently in an effort to cheer herself up from feeling the blob's distress.
At first, Echo was confused by the unfolded paws. But the confusion was enough to begin to distract the gray blobling from her own distress. And then Maki spoke again, and Echo listened. Relief set in, for while Maki could not extrapolate Echo's name from what Echo had not been able to say, she had still reached the conclusion that Echo's name was not repeat.
But that was not the only thing that Echo heard. "Hug?" She contemplated. A longing sprung up, for that very thing. "Hug," Echo repeated, rolling towards Maki's outstretched paws as if concerned the offer for a hug would be retracted any moment.
Was the guessing game well with Echo? She considered this, and it did not provoke anxiety in the same way as speaking on her own did. "Aye, the guessing game," Echo agreed.
Maki carefully encircled the blob with both paws and simply held them. There was enough pressure that the blob could hop out whenever they felt that they had enough. For some reason, she liked this blob more than most others she's seen before. Maybe it was because it felt like a smaller version of herself, but with less features...and different colors... and personality... Actually, there wasn't very much in common, but Maki liked that the blob spoke like her. It was a kind of cute feeling she got from them, like an inexperienced child.
She snaked her head down towards the blob in a swan-like pose.
Alloweth me to see. I'm not the most wondrous with words, but how about copy?
She looked up to give more thought to it. To give more options, she began to just list words, and with each word she leaned her head to each side. After each word, she peaked down to see the blob's reaction.
The tenderness of the careful hug was indescribably wonderful. Echo had an odd thought that she had not been hugged like this for a very long time, which was strange indeed. After all, Echo had never been hugged like this. Echo had only recently come into existence, after all. There was no before... Right? Echo dismissed that thought quickly, not wanting to linger on it for reasons Echo could not define to herself.
"Nay!" The gray blobling chirped a negative at the first word proposed. And the second, third, fourth, and fifth. But the sixth... "Aye! Aye! Echo! Maki most wondrous!" Echo cheerily proclaimed both her name and praise for Maki.
The little blob thankfully understood the question. She continued to hold the roundling as the both of them looked to be happily playing the game for a short time, until Maki guessed correctly on the sixth try. She smiled a bit at the compliment, then decided to make a new conversation.
So 't is echo then? I am joyous I eventually did guess 't right. So, echo, art thee in needeth of any more assistance?
Maki took a moment to tuck her tail to her side and duck her head closer to her body. She stretched her wings and cupped them over both her head and Echo to provide shade from the light. She then continued on.
If 't be true not, art there any questions thee wanteth to ask me? I believe I has't a large pool of experience from wandering 'round, and wouldst be happy to help in yond regard.
Maki smiled, and it cheered Echo even further. The much smaller blobling's pale gaze now looked radiant with joy. "Maki guess 't right!" It was more a full sentence, Echo's words this time, but it was still as much a pieced together bit of speech as anything else the gray blobling spoke.
"Questions..." Echo repeated, considering this. "...I has't been sitting for a long while. I ask thee what's wandering?"
It appeared that Echo was beginning to use better sentence structure in general, though it was a different kind of speech than most bloblings used. Not that Echo knew that. She was currently feeling quite proud of her collection of words. They weren't Echo's words, all used by Maki previously, but that made them better.
Echo's happiness reflected onto Maki. She was glad that the poor blob wasn't troubled any more. If anything, they were getting more expressive and vocal. It was amusing to hear her speech pattern repeated back.
She heard Echo's question of what wandering was. Luckily it was easy enough to answer. After all, she did suggest it just a few moments back. She tapped her tail on the sand for a few moments to gather her thoughts for a good answer.
Wandering is... For thee at least, rolling or floating 'round terrea to see all the lands, creatures, and plants. There art many places to see. Some art bitter cold, some art hot. There's wet, dry like the sands we're currently in, and some has't cities!
Maki shifted the blob to one of her arms, still holding on, to use her claw to draw.
Doth best be careful though. Not all of terrea is friendly. There art tar pits yond only accept a certain doctrine and trap anyone else. There art aggressive creatures and fauna liketh the blob-eating bulb. One shall suck thee in and keep thee in its dark maw. W'rrying of all, not all bloblings has't valorous intentions. There hast been a war because of this.
Each time she spoke of something, she drew a small and simple doodle to illustrate each. Not wanting to cause the blob any distress, she quickly changed the topic. while returning her paw to wrap around the blob.
Just a precaution. It's not as if 't be true aught can actually 'kill'. None of us bloblings very much know yond word, but the goddess Ichor, who is't did create us, hath said so. Though, yond doesn't mean its unpleasant to experience. I am sure thee shall beest fine. Any other questions?
It was a lot to take in. So many new words for Echo to collect. The gray blobling intently listened with great fascination to Maki's explanation of wandering. So many places, with so many different environments to them! And cities! Echo had never seen a city in memory, but Maki sounded enthusiastic about cities, so cities must be good.
While Echo paid attention to the drawings and the words regarding dangers, it was with an air of curiosity more than anything for Echo still felt that the scariest thing that she would ever face was fears that were not faced on the outside but instead the inside.
"Maki valorous!" Echo chirped, forgetting proper grammar somewhat in favor of simply praising Maki as the other blobling finished speaking. "Maki know very much!"
Echo did have one question, but to keep another being seemed to be a bad thing from Maki's explanation. At least, that was how Echo had understood the words. "Nay! None questions!"
It was nice to see a blob that listened to her explanation, unlike some other blobs that would sometimes blow her off or ignore her. Maki smiled and chuckled slightly from the praise. With no more questions and Echo no longer in distress, Maki didn't have any reason to stay with them any longer. It was rather a shame too, as they were relatively adorable as far as blobs go. However, Maki's self proclaimed duty of helping blobs in need was still in progress, and she was sure there must be more out there like Echo that could use her assistance.
She unwrapped her arms from around Echo and let them settle onto the sand. She then stretched out her back legs and bent her wings to either side for a long stretch. Afterwards, she collected herself and looked down at Echo.
I'm afraid to sayeth yond I best be going anon if 't be true there's nothing else yond thee need. Thee seeth, I like helping blobs in need of help like thee were, so I need to travel 'round to doth so. I'm traveling to Onyxia next if 't be true thee wouldst like to come wit.
It hit Echo hard to hear that Maki was leaving, though the gray blobling tried not to show visible distress. She did not quite succeed. Pale eyes regarded Maki with a quietly sad longing as the other blobling spoke. Echo already missed Maki's hug and it was upsetting enough, so missing Maki entirely was certain to be worse.
Then came the final sentence and the offer. Pale eyes brightened with delight. "I wouldst like to come wit Maki!" Echo chimed. "I wanteth to help blobs in need of help!" For all that she was limited by anxieties, Echo very much did want to help and be like Maki.
Not only that, but Echo wanted to stay with Maki for as long as Maki let her. She might wander off at times, drawn away by curiosity, but Echo would always return to Maki.
