Recovery Pools
Hai had felt it. He could feel the emotion welling up, ready to lash out. So he excused himself before it got out of hand. They had already had multiple confrontations...they didn't need this. Not now. Not now. Not now. His body moved on autopilot as he trudged back to the deeper pond they had passed a while back. Before he had even realized it he had thrown himself into the water and begun to sink to the bottom. It was strangely comforting down here, he thought idly, watching the glowing tail of a startled axolabeb disappear further into the pond.
And for a while that's all he did, sitting at the bottom, watching as the water around him leaked blue. He did not remember if he cried much in his past life. He honestly did not remember anything from his past life after all. Perhaps that was the real issue at hand. He knew he was upset with what Caspen had done, in fact it was probably reasonable to be upset. However, it didn't explain the sting, the emptiness in his chest, the way it felt like his insides had been set on fire, as if he had lost something irreplaceable and it had been all his fault. And so he sat at the bottom of that murky puddle, watching the light of a glowgrape filter lazily down from the surface as his nonexistant heart slowed down, the tears stopped flowing, and his mind quieted. It was at this point that he realized how long since he had last breathed and resurfaced, seeing Evrah sitting quietly off to the side.
Hai could suddenly feel it bubbling up again. He nodded an acknowledgement to Evrah, still soaking wet, and sat next to him. He knew if he spoke now it would all come out, like an unstoppable flood. So he sat in silence next to Evrah at the edge of the pond, willing this irrational grief to go away.
Evrah had waited patiently. He had spent most of his life in the swamp, alone. As such, he had spent quite some time at the bottom of one pool or another for... various reasons. So Hai, being at the bottom of the pool, didn't alarm him by itself. What it could mean for Hai however... that worried the snake blob.
Evrah had determined that Hai was the most reasonable of their party and for him to feel overwhelmed... he didn't want to leave him alone for that. Even though he wasn't sure what he could do to help. As Hai surfaced he bobbed his head in greeting and waited to see if he needed to talk. When he said nothing and settled down beside him Evrah looped his tail gently around Hai, a hug of sorts. The motion was slow. Just incase Hai didn't want the contact it could be easily avoided or a word and Evrah would stop.
Hai was surprised by the gesture. Evrah had never seemed particularly touchy either, as both of them seemed to appreciate their personal space. The hug was grounding however and he hummed softly in appreciation. Perhaps due to his new body it sounded more like small purr than a hum, but he knew Evrah would not judge. They sat there in quietly for a moment longer as the waves of grief ebbed and flowed until they were manageable. It would pass, Hai suddenly knew. Although he didn't know what he lost, what he grieved over, he knew it would come back, but it would also eventually go. Whatever he had lossed was, he had apparently accepted it long ago.
With this epiphany, it was over for now. Hai finally sighed. Acceptance. That was good. "Thank you, Evrah..." He looked up at the snake blob sincerely, gratitude apparent in his eyes. However, they would need to go back to their little dysfunctional family for sure.
As they began heading back, Hai began to talk, possibly the most any blob had ever heard him talk. Hai tried to keep it as an open discussion with the snake blob, asking and listening to Evrah's opinion throughout. He told Evrah in his slow, calm voice that he had been happy to agree to the contract Evrah had laid out and he thought it was a great idea to lay down ground rules and expectations among their growing group. Their group definitely had issues and they should attempt to address them as reasonable blobs. How could one do so, however, when one blob didn't want to give them a single chance and another was hellbent on splatting themselves despite the protests of everyone else?
